Your guide will help you explore hidden viewpoints and tell tales of Fado, the hauntingly beautiful music that originated here. Be sure to visit the São Jorge Castle, offering panoramic views of the city, and perhaps stop at a traditional Fado house for a taste of this unique musical style. Alfama’s charm is sure to captivate you, making it a perfect beginning for your Lisbon exploration.

Belém Exploration

In the afternoon, your private guide will lead you to the historical district of Belém, where you’ll be surrounded by monuments that celebrate Portugal’s Age of Exploration, when Portuguese navigators embarked on epic voyages to discover new lands.

First, visit the Jerónimos Monastery, a stunning example of Manueline architecture that houses the tomb of Vasco da Gama. Next, stop by the Belém Tower, a fortified tower that once guarded the entrance to the city’s harbor. Don’t miss the Monument to the Discoveries, a sculpture that honors the country’s many explorers.

Finally, treat yourself to the world-renowned Pastéis de Belém, delicious custard tarts that are a local favorite.

Exploration of Quinta da Regaleira

As the day progresses, set foot in Quinta da Regaleira, a mansion enveloped by an enchanting garden. Commissioned by a wealthy Portuguese businessman and designed by an Italian opera-set designer, it is a testament to imagination and mystique.

This 19th-century palace, a sublime fusion of Gothic, Indian, and Moorish styles, is surrounded by botanical gardens that harbor flora from around the globe. As your guide walks you through, appreciate the fine stucco work, ornate windows, and exotic plant species like Chinese weeping cypress and Mexican palms.

Return to Lisbon in the evening.

Amazing! Great vacation, great time. They handled everything for us. All transfers and tours were taken care of. We didn’t wait in lines. Whenever any issues arose. They solved them before we even knew about them. Can’t say what a pleasure it was to work with them, and to visit these beautiful countries! Worth, every penny! Priceless memories that even the beautiful pictures can’t describe enough. Especially loved the dinner we made at the cooking class in Barcelona and the balloon ride in Segovia. But everything was wonderful!

Day 3: Lisbon to Cascais and Estoril – Coastal Beauty and Relaxation

Boca do Inferno, Cascais, Portugal
Boca do Inferno, Cascais, Portugal

Venture from Lisbon’s urban charm to the serene shores of Cascais and Estoril in just 40 minutes with your private chauffeur.

Renowned for their golden beaches and relaxed ambiance, these coastal gems offer a perfect blend of natural beauty and leisure, making them the ideal spot for sun-seekers and those in pursuit of tranquility.

Discovering Cascais' Historical Heart

Cascais, once a humble fishing village, has transformed over the years into a favored resort destination for the elite while still retaining its maritime charm.

With your private guide, wander through its narrow cobblestone streets and explore the town’s rich history. The coastal forts, like Fortaleza da Cidadela and the Santa Marta Lighthouse, are reminiscent of a time when they defended the town from pirates and invaders.

Delight in the vibrant market square and marvel at the intricately tiled facades that tell tales of bygone days. Each corner of Cascais holds a story, from royal summer getaways to artists who sought inspiration from its shores.

Lunchtime: Seafood Indulgence by the Bay

No trip to Cascais would be complete without indulging in its culinary offerings. Opt for a seaside restaurant where you can savor the freshest seafood plucked straight from the Atlantic. Whether it’s a plate of golden crispy sardines, a bowl of aromatic clam stew, or grilled sea bass drizzled with olive oil, the flavors are as authentic as the maritime views before you.

Estoril - The Riviera of Portugal

A short drive from Cascais brings you to Estoril, another jewel of the Portuguese coastline.

Known for its glitzy casino, which is said to have inspired Ian Fleming’s James Bond novel “Casino Royale,” Estoril has been the playground for royalty, spies, and celebrities. With your guide, stroll through its lush gardens, discover the grandeur of the mansions from the Belle époque era, and understand why Estoril’s allure goes beyond its famous gambling den.

The Tamariz Beach, with its backdrop of the casino and Estoril’s fortress, provides a perfect setting for relaxation or a gentle walk on the sands.

Sunset Serenade at Boca do Inferno

Conclude the day at Boca do Inferno, a dramatic cliff formation just outside Cascais. As its name, “Mouth of Hell,” suggests, watching the ferocious waves crash into the rock caverns during high tide is an awe-inspiring spectacle. But as the sun sets, casting a golden hue over the waters and cliffs, the scene transforms from dramatic to serene, offering a moment of pure, unadulterated beauty.

With the sun bidding adieu, make your journey back to Lisbon, carrying with you the tranquil memories of a day spent by the captivating Portuguese coast.

Walking through the main gate, decorated with traditional azulejos, you’re welcomed by a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings with vibrant bougainvillea cascading from balconies.

Unravel the rich tapestry of Óbidos’ history, from its Roman origins to its prominence under Moorish rule and later as a wedding gift to Portuguese queens.

The town is a living testament to its past, with medieval architecture, churches, and the formidable castle, which now serves as a pousada (historic hotel). Pause for a moment to sip on a glass of “ginjinha,” the local cherry liqueur typically enjoyed in a chocolate cup.

Lunchtime: A Taste of Medieval Portugal

Opt for one of the traditional taverns or restaurants in Óbidos. Here, you can indulge in hearty Portuguese dishes that might have been served to nobles and knights. A stew or freshly grilled fish paired with local wines sets the stage for the culinary journey ahead in Évora.

Drive to Évora

Post lunch, your journey takes a southern turn towards the Alentejo region, home to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city. The drive itself is picturesque, with vast plains and cork oak forests emblematic of the Alentejo landscape.

Immersion into Évora's History

Upon arriving in Évora, its Roman Temple, often referred to as the Temple of Diana, immediately captures your attention. Dating back to the first century, it’s a testament to Évora’s long history and varied influences.

Strolling the city’s narrow streets with your guide, every corner reveals a new layer of its past. From the grandeur of the Cathedral of Évora, a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, to the eerily fascinating Chapel of Bones, where walls are adorned with human skulls and bones, Évora consistently intrigues.

Don’t miss the city’s aqueduct, whose arches stretch impressively across town and countryside alike, a marvel of 16th-century engineering. The town square, Praça do Giraldo, is the heart of Évora, surrounded by charming cafes and boutiques housed in Renaissance-era buildings.

Alentejo Gastronomy in Évora

Conclude your day at one of Évora’s traditional eateries. The Alentejo region is known for its rich and savory dishes, from “açorda Alentejana,” a bread soup with garlic, coriander, and olive oil, to “migas” made with bread crumbs and various meats.

Pair your meal with a local wine; Alentejo wines are renowned for their full-bodied richness.

Overnight in Evora.

We booked with Emily solely after reading these reviews for a 2 week trip to Portugal and southern Spain. Never met her prior. She and her team exceeded our expectations. Every detail of the trip went smoothly and her planning was perfect for our group. Lots of guided tours intermingled with just the right amount of free time. We challenged Emily and her team with 3 generations of travelers from 18 months to upper 60's and she handled our group perfectly with details such as baby seats in cars and cribs in hotel rooms. Our trip included Lisbon, Porto, Sevilla, and Madrid with day trips to Cordoba, Rhonda and and a small "white city." All in, we would highly recommend Emily and her team for any travel in Spain and Portugal. She also does Morocco but we didn't have time for that.
