Destinations On Our Tomar Day Trip

Almourol Castle

Almourol Castle, Portugal
Almourol Castle, Portugal

One of the first stops on your journey is Almourol Castle. Rising majestically from a rocky island in the middle of the Tagus River, this castle is one of the most emblematic and intriguing sites linked to the Knights Templar in Portugal.

It was the Templars who, in the 12th century, constructed the imposing castle we see today atop earlier Roman and Moorish fortifications. The castle served a strategic function in the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, protecting the line of the Tagus River.

Access to the castle is via a short boat ride, offering guests a unique opportunity to appreciate the fortress from all angles. The perfectly preserved castle walls, watchtowers, and keep evoke a sense of the long-gone era, fostering a tangible connection to the Templars who once roamed these battlements. Be sure to climb to the top of the keep for a sweeping panoramic view over the river and surrounding countryside.

Journey to Tomar: Tracing the Path of the Knights Templar

As we leave Almourol Castle behind, our journey continues towards Tomar, an essential Templar stronghold and the Order’s headquarters in Portugal.

This quaint city, rich with history and charm, was founded inside the walls of the Convento de Cristo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This Convent-Fortress was not only a religious and military base but also a place of profound knowledge, where art and science coexisted harmoniously.

The drive to Tomar winds through picturesque countryside and traditional Portuguese villages. As we draw nearer, the impressive Convento de Cristo comes into view, perched atop a hill, casting its long shadow over the city.

Upon arrival in Tomar, you can immediately sense the city’s historical significance. Its narrow streets, medieval architecture, and serene atmosphere speak volumes about its illustrious past.

Despite its size, Tomar played a pivotal role in Portuguese history, particularly during the Age of Discoveries, when it was the stage for planning the maritime routes to India and the New World. Today, Tomar remains a vibrant testament to its historical legacy, offering a wealth of cultural experiences for those keen to delve into the mysteries and marvels of the Knights Templar.

10 Day Private Tour: It was such a pleasure to work with Emily. Everything went off without a hitch! There were some changes either in drivers or guides but this was communicated in advance via whats app. Drivers were always on time and very professional. Our 2 favorite guides were Daniel Guia in Madrid and Luis Salas in Seville. They gave great recommendations for shopping, restaurants or sights to visit when you were on your own. We had so many wonderful experiences on our trip from the private horse show outside of Cordoba with a live Spanish guitarist to the white villages , tapas bars, walking tours of Seville, Madrid and the Alhambra. Emily was in contact all the time if needed . Sorry Emily it took so long to write this, life gets so busy and that 's why you have Guided Portugal plan your trip!

Tomar Castle and the Convent of Christ: The Last Templar Fortress

Guided tour Convent of Christ Tomar, Portugal.
Convent of Christ Tomar, Portugal

Nestled on a wooded hilltop overlooking the charming town of Tomar, the formidable silhouette of the Castle and the Convent of Christ is an arresting sight that epitomizes the historic and cultural grandeur of this region.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this complex served as the strategic headquarters of the Knights Templar and later became the bastion of the Order of Christ, directly influencing Portugal’s remarkable Age of Discoveries.

The Tomar Castle, an integral part of the complex, stands as a testament to the military architecture of the 12th century. The robust, high walls and stoic watchtowers bear the marks of battles fought, tales of bravery, and the intricate military strategies of the Templar Knights. A walk within its walls transports you back to a time of knights and legends.

However, the true architectural gem of the site is the Convent of Christ. Its rich architectural tapestry, an amalgamation of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance styles, creates a fascinating monument that is unparalleled in its complexity and symbolism. Each architectural phase tells a story of different periods in Portugal’s history and the changing religious and cultural influences over centuries.

The Charola, the original Templar round church, stands as the heart of the convent. Originally a 12th-century oratory, it resonates with spiritual energy. The ornate, multi-tiered Manueline Window is another highlight.

Church of Santa Maria do Olival: A Templar Necropolis

In the serene setting on the east bank of the tranquil Nabão River stands the unassuming yet historically significant Church of Santa Maria do Olival. This was the spiritual sanctuary for the Knights Templar, constructed in the 12th century to serve as their pantheon.

Simplicity rules the architecture of the church. Its Gothic structure doesn’t vie for attention but invites you to experience its history and tranquillity. It was in this calm that the Knights Templar, the protectors of Christian pilgrims, once sought spiritual solace.

The church further cements its relevance in Templar history as it houses the tombs of Templar Masters. Among these is the tomb of Gualdim Pais, the legendary founder of Tomar and a celebrated figure in Templar history. Walking among these tombs, you are reminded of the lives of those who shaped the course of history.

The Church of Santa Maria do Olival is more than just a church. It is a hallowed memorial to the Knights Templar, a tranquil repository of their history, making it a profoundly evocative place of reflection. A visit here complements the rich tapestry of experiences offered by the Tomar region.

Emily and Jorge are the absolute best hosts! Sweet, knowledgeable, and fun people, would book a tour with them without hesitation!

Tomar's Historical Center: A Glimpse into the Past

Walking through Tomar’s historical center, you will be guided through. The narrow cobblestone streets, lined with traditional white houses, lead to charming squares where locals gather at cafes and shops. The 15th-century town hall, the ancient waterwheel, and the picturesque Republic Square with the statue of Gualdim Pais all add to the town’s historic charm.

Synagogue of Tomar: Portugal's Best-Preserved Medieval Synagogue

Tomar medieval Synagogue, Santarem district, Portugal

Located in the heart of Tomar, the Synagogue is a testament to the city’s rich multicultural history.

Built-in the 15th century, it’s the best-preserved medieval synagogue in Portugal. Its austere exterior contrasts with its elegant interior, featuring a vaulted ceiling and four pillars symbolizing the matriarchs of Judaism. Now functioning as a museum, it provides a fascinating insight into the life of the Jewish community in medieval Portugal.

Aqueduct of Pegões: A Testament to 16th Century Engineering

Journeying just outside the town of Tomar, you’ll encounter the breathtaking Aqueduct of Pegões. This monumental structure stands as a vivid testament to the ingenious engineering prowess of the 16th century.

Designed to deliver water to the Convent of Christ in Tomar, the aqueduct stretches an impressive six kilometers in length, but it’s not just the scale that captivates its visitors; it’s the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic grace.

The aqueduct was commissioned by King Philip I, and its construction was overseen by military architect Filipe Terzi. It took nearly two decades to complete, with the workforce comprised of skilled stonemasons and unskilled laborers, including prisoners and enslaved people. The aqueduct comprises 58 semicircular arches across its lower levels, while the top tier, where the water channel resides, features 16 pointed arches.

As you walk along the lofty maintenance corridor, you’re treated to panoramic views of the verdant countryside, where the beauty of nature intermingles with the grandeur of human ingenuity. The arches rising from the serene landscape, silhouetted against the sky, offer an unforgettable sight.
